Innovation in Medical Displays

delivering clinical value to the medical imaging market

In healthcare we are rapidly moving towards the “digital age” where displays – of different sizes and technologies – will be widespread and used for new, innovative applications.

New challenging requirements have to be met.

Flat panel displays are penetrating the market and new, emerging technologies - some of them still in their early stages of research - could open new horizons by making new approaches possible in the way doctors, nurses, patients … deal with medicine in the near future. Technological innovation has been, and is still, a key focus point of the FIMI’s strategy.

We are aware that to be a technological leader in such a dynamic industry such as that of the display is a challenging target. To succeed FIMI can count on the synergies with the other

Philips Groups and primarily with Philips Research.

FIMI - in co-operation with them and with other third party technological partners – is introducing remarkable technological advances in medical displays and is developing new and  innovative display-based solutions.

A complete range of high brightness LCD “medical” monitors including:

• 18 inch color (500 cd/sqm brightness) and grayscale (> 2000 cd/sqm) models with 1.3 million pixel resolution,

• a 21 inch color display (1600x1200 pixels resolution and 500 cd/sqm)

• a 21.3” grayscale monitor with 5 million pixels resolution and an impressive brightness of 1700 cd/sqm specifically designed for mammography.

The clinical benefits of high brightness displays have been proved by an observer study carried out at the Amsterdam Medical Centre; they improve readability resulting in faster and more accurate diagnosis and less fatigue.

A breakthrough solution for an LCD monitor with a very high dynamic range and a CRT like black level

Based on a structure of two back-to-back stacked LCD panels, this monitor offers an outstanding contrast ratio in excess of 100,000:1 and enhanced characteristics even at wide viewing angles. You will be impressed by its deep, “CRT-like” black level (approx. 0.005 cd/sqm).

A special algorithm has been developed to drive the two layers accordingly, to ensure the full compliance with the DICOM Grey Scale Display Function and to avoid artifacts when displaying moving images.

LCD monitors with innovative backlighting solutions

including LED-based backlights and backlights with tuneable white point. The LED backlight - developed in cooperation with PDS (Professional Display Systems) – is based on a special, innovative optical design allowing a slim structure of the display and offering unique features in terms of efficiency, heat management, colour and brightness uniformity. Moreover it offers the advantages of the LED lighting technology such as wide colour gamut, long lifetime, absence of mercury, fast response, adjustment of colour and no sensitivity to temperature.

The fine tuning of the LCD displays white point represents an important feature in medical imaging to get consistency in x, y color co-ordinates when two or more monitors are used – side by side - in a cluster configuration.

In addition to the monitor using LEDs as light source for the LCD – FIMI is introducing other solutions to achieve a tunable white point and capable of overcoming the problem of the wide tolerances of the white x, y color coordinates in the LCD panels currently available .

Large screen displays for the hospital of the coming years

The demand for an increasing number of medical images (multi-modality) and of higher resolution requires the use of displays with larger screens. Technology is now ready to shape new visualization scenarios in the hospital of the coming years.

FIMI offers some innovative solutions such as:

• a 30 inch LCD with an impressive resolution of 4 million pixels (2560x1600) and a screen format of 16:10;

• a 56 inch LCD with 8 million pixel resolution (3840x2160);

• and finally “medical” projection displays.

All these displays have been designed keeping firmly in mind the critical requirements of the medical applications in terms of image quality. Special software packages for calibration according to the DICOM GSDF are offered.

A new dimension in medical imaging… 3D displays to see things as they really are

Philips Research and Philips 3D Solutions have been working on 3D display technology for several years and have invented a unique solution (the “multi-view slanted lenticular“ method) that overcomes the problems highlighted in other approaches and matches the requirements of highly demanding applications in the professional area such as the medical ones. The benefits of 3D imaging apply to nearly any types of medical images.

The Philips display is switchable from 2D to 3D views allowing one to move from 3D to 2D visualization depending on the specific content to be analyzed.

The ProScribe wireless display... designed for true mobility in the hospital

Also in healthcare, mobility is becoming an important issue.

The boundaries of the hospital are broadening and specialists and nurses - while on the move - want to stay in touch with their patients and their tasks. Mobile terminals, such as tablet PC, PDAs and laptops are certainly available, but none has been designed by having the special needs of the professional users, such as the healthcare operators, in mind.

ProScribe is more than just a wireless thin client; it features a rugged design (IP 523 water and dust resistant, one meter drop safe) and a secure wireless connectivity, it offers a large variety of I/O interfaces for easy expansion, smart card support for easy user login, full connectivity with external devices, full data security on the wireless link, direct and easy access to Internet.

Moreover it is light (1.6 Kg), user friendly (touch screen) and is equipped with a nice 12 inch display with XGA (1024x768 pixels) resolution. Applications in healthcare where the ProScribe wireless terminal can be of great benefit are endless:

Electronic prescription at the patient’s bedside, charge capture, access to literature and clinical references, electronic medical record (EMR), bedside assessment of patient fitness prior surgery by anaesthetist, bedside review of physiological charts in ICU, remote and bedside surveillance of mother and newborn, browser based PACS (anytime anyplace access to diagnostic quality images) to name just a few.

New User Interfaces for the digital age of healthcare

In co-operation with other Philips Groups and third parts companies, FIMI is developing a variety of new, innovative user interfaces that will change the way radiologists, physicians and nurses will interact with the medical equipment while performing their tasks. Philips offers solutions based on eye and head tracking technologies, voice control, gesture-based interaction and pointing devices , often combined in a multimodal approach to get a much broader interaction bandwidth between human and machine and at the same time to enhance the interaction effectiveness and its quality.

New display-based solutions to help people with special needs

The PRO-BE, result of a co-operation with a technological Partner – is a solution integrating the ProScribe, a wireless mobile terminal, with an application software (the I-Able) specifically developed for people with special needs: elderly people, people with disabilities, people with a low level of PC skill. The solution includes a suite of SW applications designed around their needs and with main focus on simplicity and ease of use.

The PRO-BE was designed to contribute to reduce the “digital divide” suffered by the weaker part of the population such as elderly people and people with disabilities.

A comprehensive range of medical displays for modalities and PACS imaging.

With its renewed design and a variety of models the new family of FIMI’s medical monitors is able to meet the highly demanding and diversified needs of the medical imaging market.

Greyscale monitors (from 1.3 M pixel to 5 M pixels resolution) and colour monitors (from 1.3 M pixel to 3 M pixel resolution) are available including high brightness models. The PACS displays are combined with the offer of enhanced graphic boards and of the MediQa package for the remote maintenance, calibration and control of the networked displays.
